Well, I'm thoroughly pleased with how that race went. Green from flag to flag, and only one little scare about fifteen laps in. Kept the truck clean and played some good strategy to get Drew and I out to a comfortable lead in the last ten laps. Here's how it went.
I put in the wrong gear in for qualifying, so I wasn't much competition for Drew who picked up his first pole of the season (congrats bud!). That started me third though so it worked out well and Drew and I were able to gap the field for a bit and kind of get settled in. The rest of the Top 6 slowly reeled us in over the next 5 laps, so we just decided to fall in line and ride.
That lasted for the next thirty laps, until David and Brendan (the then-leaders) decided to pit on lap 38. Drew's and my strategy was to run it until it was almost empty, then pit for as little fuel as possible. That took us to lap 40, and we were able to pick up six gallons of fuel to David and Brendan's eight to come out with an almost three second lead.
Drew and I were then able to hold the lead and even increase it a little in the last ten laps of the race. The move I made kind of failed, and I feel like I waited too long to try something for the win. Oh well, still came out with a considerable points lead after a race I thought would be chaos. Needless to say, how tonight went was a pleasant surprise.
Congrats to Drew on the win, you deserved it man! Also got to give a shout-out to John Shields, who picked up his first Top 5 tonight and lead his first laps in ARC competition! Hopefully next week can go as flawlessly and I'll be able to go into Homestead and just do what I do best there -- win.
