Well, we're down off the high of last season's championship and quickly brought back to reality. I went from hero to zero pretty quickly tonight. Got a really good qualifying run in, and started P3. Drew and my strategy had us drop right to the back, where we rode for most of the race. Usually it's a good call, but didn't really work out tonight.
The first caution didn't fall until lap ten, and the race was really tame to that point. The caution flew for a single car spin on the backstretch. That's when we though it was going to get really sketchy. At this point we were around 16th-17th.
The next caution came only a few laps later when Shawn Bailey and Trevor Perry got together going into Turn 3. This put both of them out of the race and set up a five lap shootout for the rest of the field. Drew and I still sat around 16th-18th.
The restart almost got messy, but everyone got away and we went to work. We decided to swap coming to three to go and just have me push to the end. It was looking like we were going to have a serious shot at it, until they started piling it up the next lap in Turn 3. Looked like Jason Rendell got loose off Chris Shella's bumper and just set off a huge mess...directly in front of Drew and I.
We knew this was going to end the race, so we 'Days of Thundered' it, trying to make up what we could. Drew was able to keep it straight, but I got tagged and sent around at some point in the melee. I think Drew picked up 8th or 9th, but I ended up in the inside fence and finished 16th.
Big congrats to Connor Anton and Logan Clampitt, the winning pair. Connor sat on the pole and the two of them really put on a dominating performance tonight. Look at them to be major contenders come the Daytona 188 this Friday. But then again, they still have to go through Drew and I! ;)
