Tonight's qualifying session and race came and went pretty calm, as 15 drivers took to the track to battle it out for their starting position. Myself and Christopher Shella picked up the front row and locked ourselves into those spots, so long as we kept our noses clean in the Duel. We decided to drop back on the first lap of the race to stay out of trouble.
That handed the lead over to the rest of the pack, lead by Brendan Burcroff and Greg Ellis. The leaders raced side-by-side for just under four laps, until both the lead tandems needed to switch. That handed the lead over to Garrett Smithley and Brandon Hastings as the field eclipsed the halfway point.
When Smithley and Hastings had to switch on lap six, it gave the lead back to Joe Pisciotta and Greg Ellis. During the whole switch madness, David Brownell caught a good piece of the wall that would affect him for the rest of the race. Coming to lap eight Drew Carroll and Ryan Lowe came into the picture, starting a run up the outside after coming from the back of the pack.
As the field took two to go, the race for the lead saw a three-wide battle with Joe Pisciotta and Greg Ellis on the inside, Ryan Lowe and Drew Carroll in the middle, and Garrett Smithley and Brandon Hastings on the outside. Then coming to the white flag, Greg Ellis and Blade Whitt bumper hooked and it sent Ellis around. The only wreck of the race collected four cars, including Blade Whitt, Greg Ellis, Brandon Hastings, and Garrett Smithley.
Joe Pisciotta held the lead as the caution flag flew and was able to pick up the win. Ryan Lowe and Drew Carroll finished second and third after making a late-race rally to the front. Chris and I just ended up riding around about 10 seconds back to solidify our front row positions. And so with that, the field is set for the 11th Annual ARC Daytona 188. Congratulations to Joe on his win tonight and to Shella on picking up that front row start. Big thanks to all the guys on SuperNova Racing for getting this great setup to sit on the pole with!
